Slide Fest- Places
From ICP:
The use of photography as a means to document the connections between an individual and a place is a guiding principal for five Russian-born photographers-Sasha Bezzubov, Stanislav Ginzburg, Yola Monakhov, Masha Sha, and Yyuliya Lanina- who now work in New York. Russians have always been noted for their strong and complex ties to the land of their birth. These artists address that legacy as well as their feelings for the new land they call home. In the pieces to be shown, artists will be seen working to find their place in a new world. Each artist's search inspires a new look that opens the viewer's horizon, whether within the specifics of geography or the relationship between the photographer and the subject. Students should prepare for this course by doing preliminary research on a community or group with whom they would like to work. Discussions will include gaining access, what it means to document a community, creating an archive, and how to structure such a project. We will look at the work of August Sander, Tina Barney, and Sharon Lockhart, among others. This is a critique and discussion course with emphasis on aesthetic and conceptual issues. The final class will culminate in a portfolio review. PREREQUISITE: Photo II or portfolioreview *NOTE: No class, Fri Nov 28

American photographer Susan Meiselas has actively participated in these conversations and raised thought-provoking issues, which will be the topic of this afternoon panel discussion moderated by Kristen Lubben, ICP Associate Curator. The discussion will be followed by a reception in the ICP Museum.

Education Gallery: 1114 Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street
Hours: Monday–Sunday, 10:00 am–6:00 pm
Conceived through informal meetings between graduates of ICP's Full-Time programs and members of the ICP community, this collection showcases the personal vision of a diverse group of photographers free from the constraints of the commercial and editorial market. It brings together the work of 24 photographers and represents a broad social commentary on the United States at this pivotal moment in the country's history.
The photographers in this collection exemplify the cross-cultural nature of America. While living here—whether American-born, immigrant, or just passing through—each one represents a facet of this diverse society and has a unique take on its culture. There is more here than just a geographical link; each photograph in some way addresses the nature of American life. These pictures are grounded in a particular reality unique to this country, a 'New Americana' if you like.
Regarding the collection, Robert Stevens, former international photo editor at TIME and current ICP faculty member, identifies the notion that: "America, truth be told, is fractured into a thousand pieces. But it couldn’t be anything else."
Originally premiered as part of Bushwick Open Studios in June 2008, this exhibition—II AMERIKA—further expands upon the themes and issues addressed in the original, showcasing a broader spectrum of work and delving deeper into the nation's psyche. Though it would be a mistake to suggest this is a comprehensive review, there is here the making of a statement about where the country is today.
If America is a democratic idea, then Amerika is the social reality. These photographers live and breathe its air, they explore its people and its landscapes. They photograph what they find and their discoveries give us a better idea of the State of the Union than any Presidential address ever could. And to that, attention must be paid.

Lisette Model, Diane Arbus @ ICP
Currently on view at ICP in New York through September 7, 2008 are the works of Diane Arbus, Lisette Model and Richard Avedon.
From ICP.org: This exhibition brings together works by three of the most important photographers of the 1960s: Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, and Lisette Model. The intense creative relationships between these three artists helped to generate a new look in photographic portraiture, an idiosyncratic approaches to both style and subjects. Even today, their works are shocking in their boldness, and at the time their works, widely seen in magazines as well as on gallery walls, were revolutionary. The fifteen now-classic works in this exhibition are drawn from the exceptional corporate collection of photography initiated at the LaSalle Bank of Chicago by Beaumont Newhall in 1969, and recently acquired by Bank of America. The exhibition is organized by Brian Wallis, Chief Curator at the International Center of Photography.

Joyce Tenneson Booksigning @ ICP
Joyce Tenneson: A Life in Photography 1968-2008 Joyce Tenneson is one of the leading photographers of her generation. Her work is published regularly in magazines worldwide, including Time, LIFE, Esquire, Newsweek, and The New York Times Magazine. She is the author of ten books, including the bestselling Wise Women. Through her workshops and lectures, Tenneson has made a tremendous impact on thousands of professional and amateur photographers. This is the first retrospective overview of Tenneson's thirty years in photography, showcasing her best work from the series Flower Portraits, Light Warriors, Illuminations, Wise Women, Amazing Men, and Intimacy, as well as unknown early photographs, self-portraits, and writings. Tenneson's portraits go beyond a surface recording of her subjects' likenesses. Her signature images -- studio portraits that wrap the sitter in an ethereal glow -- attempt to show the inner person behind the facade. "I want to allow others to reveal and celebrate aspects of themselves that are usually hidden," Tenneson has said. Joyce Tenneson: A Life in Photography 1968-2008 will be an illuminating walk through the life and work of a unique talent in contemporary photography. This title is due April 2008.Joyce Tenneson will be at ICP for a book signing on April 11th.
