Joni Sternbach book now available

Joni Sternbach's gorgeous new book, SurfLand is now available to order!

Sternbach makes her photographs in tintype, a labor-intensive technique little changed since it's invention in the 1850s. Spontaneous and unpredictable, the streaks and tonal variations in the finished photographs reflect their hand-made character, the corners rubbed where they were held in the camera.

Posing on rocky outcrops, in front of uprooted trees, or on thick mats of woody flotsam, Sternbach's surfers inhabit strange landscapes. The best of Sternbach's photographs convey insistent longing. They are about relationships - the relationship between surfer and board, between human and landscape, between photographer and subject, and between the surfers themselves...she has discovered a new sort of home - a place without walls, defined only by belonging and the physicality of existence.

Upcoming Exhibition: Rachel Papo at Clamp Art

Rachel Papo has a solo exhibition of her series, Desperately Perfect and Serial No. 3817131, at Clamp Art gallery in Chelsea. It opens February 12th and runs through March 14, 2009.

Rachel's first book, Serial No. 3817131, was published last May by powerHouse Books and has received much attention since its release.

Michal Chelbin

The talented Michal Chelbin just came out with a newly published monograph, Strangely Familiar: Acrobats, Athletes, and Other Traveling Troupes, available to purchase on Aperture.

From her artist statement:

Most of the people I photograph have something in common; they are not the mainstream, and many of them are small town performers (For example, they could be dwarfs in a theatre play, ball room dancers or young contortionists). I try to photograph my subjects dislocated from their performing environment and set in casual settings, off stage: at home, on the street or in a park. Some of them with their costumes and others wear everyday cloths. I try to create a seemingly private moment, one where they are not performing or on stage. The main themes in my work are not social or topical, but private and mythical; I search for people who have a legendary quality in them; a mix between odd and ordinary.

She is also participating in a solo show at the Andrea Meislin Gallery.

The response to Blurb's Photo Book Contest has been oberwhelming and we will leave the sorting through all the entires to others, like Andrew Hetherington. However we wanted to highlight Emily Shur's (who we recently spoke to for Nymphoto Conversations) book:I Can See For Miles.
Joerg Colberg pointed out that it would be nice if Blurb would offer a discount on the sales price of the books entered for competition (thus encouraging people to buy the books) -- good idea. Even just a temporary sale would be great.

Hijacked- opening tonight!

Big City Press just anounced the release of their new book and exhibition, Hijacked. It features 24 Australian and 20 American photographers. Among the American artists showing are Amy Stein, Lisa Kereszi, Angela Boatwright, Alana Celii, Suzy Poling, Robin Schwartz, Sarah Small, and Jennifer Juniper Stratford.
