Tomorrow: Lorna Simpson @ Aperture

(via Exposures)

Join Aperture and the Parsons Department of Photography for an artist’s talk with Lorna Simpson at Aperture Gallery. Simpson is known for her use of the image of the African-American woman to examine the ways in which gender and culture shape the interactions, relationships, and experiences of our lives in contemporary, multi-racial America. Recently, she has turned her attention to moving images; in film and video works such as Call Waiting, Simpson presents individuals engaged in intimate and enigmatic elliptical conversations that elude easy interpretation while addressing the mysteries of both identity and desire. Her newest works include figurative drawings of characters from her video works and a collection of drawings of women’s heads, turned in profile to reveal their various hairstyles. Simpson is currently creating installations involving found vintage photographs accompanied by her own drawings and new photography.

Join Dutch artist Jacqueline Hassink as she discusses her latest book, Car Girls (Aperture, April 2009), in the context of her other critically acclaimed books and exhibitions that deal conceptually with issues of power and social relations. Car Girls is a body of work that Hassink created over five years, photographing "car girls" during major car shows in seven different cities on three continents. As she describes it, Hassink uses these sites to reflect on "differing cultural values with regard to their ideal images of beauty and women. The series captures the moments during the women's performances when they become more like dolls or tools than individuals."

Tomorow: Michal Chelbin @ the New York Public Library

Tuesday, March 24, 6:30 pm

As part of the Photographer @ the Library lecture series, Aperture and the New York Public Library are pleased to announce a special talk and book signing with acclaimed Israeli artist Michal Chelbin who will discuss the work from her first monograph. Strangely Familiar: Acrobats, Athletes, and Other Traveling Troupes (Aperture, 2008) features richly detailed, internally charged portraits of small town performers in circuses and other traveling troupes taken over a period of six years in the Ukraine, Russia, Israel and England. Chelbin’s most frequent subjects are children and adolescents, yet her work encompasses a mix of generations. Often captured in performance costumes, Chelbin’s palette is intense, with a distinctive use of saturated pinks, blues, and greens. Her black-and-white images, which are intermingled throughout the book, have an almost Pictorialist richness. Though her influences are evident—most notably August Sander and Diane Arbus—the photographs in Strangely Familiar have a unique visual and emotional impact.

Michal Chelbin (born in Haifa, Israel, 1974) has lived in Brooklyn since 2006. Her work has appeared in several solo shows and more recently at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel and at the Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York; the latter also represents her.

At first glance playful, closer observation of the work reveals darker narratives rife with anxiety and uncertainty.

Aperture Foundation is pleased to partner with Raymond Weil to highlight the winner of the Raymond Weil Club 2007 International Photography Prize, Catherine Leutenegger. Ms. Leutenegger's work will be on display for a special one-week exhibition in Aperture Foundation's bookstore and board annex concurrent with Aperture Gallery's show, Invasion 68 Prague, photographs by Josef Koudelka. Hors-Champ (Off-Camera) is an invitation to discover a place that often remains unknown: where photographs are made—workshops and studios, darkrooms, and labs for developing and printing. The work behind the illusion, so meticulously crafted by photographers in their studios, is indeed rarely revealed. The realization of this project arises from a personal desire to explore, behind the scenes, the world of photography professionals at a point in time when the medium is undergoing deep technological and aesthetic changes. In this digitalized age, what really occurs behind the scenes? What will become of studios and traditional photo labs? Hors-Champ is an homage to photography, its history, and to the creators of images, and encourages the viewer to reflect on the future of this medium of communication.
