Artist: Hidemi Takagi

Hidemi Takagi was born in Kyoto, Japan and resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Ms. Takagi has been exhibited both nationally and internationally for several years. Takagi participated in the AIM program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2003. The program led to a group exhibition as well as a catalogue, NYFA’s (The New York Foundation for the Arts) Immigrant Outreach program for New York-based immigrant artists in 2006-2007, and was selected for LMCC (Lower Manhattan Cultural Council) Swing Space, will participate in 2010. Her work reviewed in Time Out Tel Aviv, Time Out New York, NY Times, and Village Voice. Takagi’s latest project “Blender” was published on NYFA (NY Foundation for the Arts) Current.

Michelle Kloehn received her MFA from Bard College and her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. She is the recipient of two MacDowell Colony Fellowships and her work has been included in exhibitions at Sepia International (NY), Jen Bekman Gallery (NY), and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Her work was featured in BLIND SPOT Issue 36, Fall Portfolio and has been written about in The New Yorker, ARTnews, and New York Arts Magazine. Her photographs are in the collection of the National Media Museum in Bradford, England and in various private collections. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Stephen Meierding has a passion for bringing normally uninspiring objects to life through the investigatory process of photography. "It's a thrill when an object that at first seems normal and mundane, is suddenly brought to a magical new stature through lighting and composition," says Steve. His process is about exploration and investigation. "Everything has something positive, new, and interesting that can be exposed and brought to light."

Steve studied Advertising and Graphic design at the University of Delaware and began his photography career in New York City in 2002. He learned still-life photography while working full time as an assistant for advertising photographer, Craig Cutler, working on hi-end brands such as Rolex, Bombay Sapphire, Tiffany's, Infiniti Cars, and IBM, among many others. He also worked under Fashion Photographer, Regan Cameron, and Kevin Macintosh, among many other heavy hitters in fashion before he moved his own photography to the front burner. A native of Los Angeles, California, Suzanne Révy moved to the east coast to study photography at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. In the years following art school, she worked as a photography editor for a photography agency and two magazines, U.S.News & World Report, and Yankee Magazine. With the move to New England, and the arrival of two sons, she began photographing her children, their cousins and friends. Her ongoing series, Small Wonders, has been shown at the Camera Club of New York in Manhattan, the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Atelier Gallery at the Stoneham Theater in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the Workspace Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Danforth Museum’s 2009 New England Photography Biennial in Framingham, Massachusetts, and Project Basho’s Onward ‘10.

Title: Bathing/Benyen: A woman bathes in the sacred waterfall at Saut d'Eau, near Ville Bonheur, about 60 miles north of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The annual three day holiday, which takes place in July, honors Our Lady of Carmel, the patron saint of Ville Bonheur, and Erzulie Dantor, a Vodou spirit associated with water and sometimes also portrayed by the Virgin Mary.

The Nymphoto Collective is proud to announce its online auction and print sale to benefit the relief effort in Haiti.

The Art for Haiti auction will be coordinated by eBay Giving Works and 100% of the proceeds will go to Partners in Health. The auction & print sale will take place February 27 through March 9, 2010.

Partners in Health is a recognized non-profit organization that, over the course of 20 years, has established 12 medical non-profit facilities in Haiti. Partners in Health is committed to continue to work with the people of Haiti for better health care.

It has been only a month since the earthquake in Haiti, but the press is already beginning to slow down its coverage, which is why the Nymphoto Collective has organized this online auction. The Haitian people have a very long road ahead to recovery. The artists participating in this fundraiser want to show their solidarity and let the Haitian people know that they will continue to support them in the months and years ahead. Some of the participating artists have family and friends in Haiti, and some have built relationships with the Haitian people and culture through photography.

On Photography Collectives & Thank you

Joerg Colberg blogged about Photography Collectives today. It is an interesting post and made me think about Nymphoto's efforts and history.

Nymphoto was conceived because we saw a need to help promote women artists but also because we all yearned for community and support (particularly after the loss of structure that comes with finishing one's studies and leaving the academic environment).
Running a collective is not easy. Especially in New York. New York, where everything is expensive, where no one has enough time, where there are a multitude of legal obstacles, where everyone has an opinion and where everyone is happy to criticize and where sometimes people even are happy to belittle or undermine one's efforts. But New York is still a great center for creativity and culture and so New York based Nymphoto soldiers on.
Cara Phillips wrote about her experience of creating & running Women In Photography (also New York based) in her blog post titled "Risk & Reward" (June 6, 2008) and in it she explains how much effort goes into something that might look effortless to others.
Nymphoto continuous to grow. And 2008 promises to be a great year for Nymphoto. And in the spirit of this holiday week, I just wanted to thank my cohorts at Nymphoto and applaud all others out there supporting us and one another: THANK YOU!

Lola Alvarez Bravo (1907–1993) was Mexico’s first woman photographer. Her work is exceptional for both its compelling quality and its startling diversity. She began making photographs in 1926 under the tutelage of her husband, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and continued photographing for the next sixty years. Some of her earliest photographs reflect her husband’s influence—they shared the same simple Kodak camera, and often the same role of film. But Lola achieved her own aesthetic during the 1940s and ’50s, concentrating on two particularly vivid bodies of work: portraiture and street photography. This Aperture traveling exhibition includes vintage photographs encompassing the full range of her extraordinary work. See the accompanying book here.

Empowering the Artist

Rob Haggart A.K.A. A Photo Editor recently posted two important posts on his blog.
In September he posted Educating Artists about Bad Practices and Finding a Rep or Starting a Collective.
Both both are very relevant and give food for thought - and further underline how artists can respond to changes in the industries (both commercial and fine art). The latter post also speaks about why a collective (like this one ;) ) can be a good idea.
Another excellent site to visit to keep informed is www.photoattorney.com published by attorney and wild life photographer Carolyn E. Wright.

Women in The Arts

While perusing the Magnum Blog I came across a posting from last year in regard to the Inge Morath Award. In this post from March 8, 2007 Magnum also linked to the Magnum mulitmedia essay Woman's Day.
A discussion in the comments section ensued that examined the implication of singling out the contribution of women to photography. It is an interesting read and sheds some light on this complex issue, one that we have struggled with at Nymphoto as well: we do not like the idea of exclusivity per se and 'shutting out' one gender, on the other hand to us it is fact that women still face much bias and additional obstacles -- not just in photography - and thus Nymphoto hopes to address some of the issues and give support to its members (and female photographer in general).

Linda McCartney Retrospective @ James Hyman Gallery

James Hyman Gallery in London is showing a retrospective of the work of Linda MCartney through July 2008. Mostly known for her marriage to Paul McCartney, her vegge meals and her daughter Stella McCartney, Linda McCartney however was originally (and remained) a photographer. An observer more than a creator, she captured the life around her. To me her most compelling imagery is that of her family. There is an image of a young Paul McCartney somewhere on a farm in England , with children and an animal running around that is iconic in its hippy idealism.
