Sylvia Plachy Gallery Talk

(via Marketing Photos with Mary Virginia Swanson)

The exhibition “Forever Hold Your Peace” juried by photographer Sylvia Plachy will open on Saturday, June 6th from 6-9 p.m.

From the event website entry:

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is pleased to present “Forever Hold Your Peace,” a group exhibition on the subject of weddings, juried by Sylvia Plachy. In curating this exhibition, Plachy, a Hungarian born, New York based, world-renowned photographer, selected 31 photographs depicting the traditions, customs, symbols and the rich human tableau surrounding wedding rituals.

Featured artists include Marc Pagani, Evan Abramson, Katie Delavaugh and Kate Nicholson. A slideshow of 58 additional images will be featured in the exhibition.

“Forever Hold Your Peace” will be on view from June 5 through July 19, 2009 at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St. New Orleans, LA 70130. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, June 6, from 6-9pm. Ms. Plachy will present a Gallery Talk at 7pm, where she will walk through the gallery to discuss the show and her thought process in selecting images.

“I was looking for the same kind of pictures that I look for when I am photographing. I was looking for what would move me and for what I would never tire of looking. I wanted to see a burst of life palpable on a piece of paper.”

- Sylvia Plachy

Tonight: Barbara Bosworth & Klea McKenna

(via Marketing Photos with Mary Virginia Swanson)

PhotoAlliance presents:

Friday, December 5, 2008
San Francisco Art Institute Lecture Hall 800 Chestnut Street San Francisco, Ca (at Jones Street)
7:30 pm

Barbara Bosworth is professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.

Her images concern our interaction with nature and the environment. Using a large-format 8 by 10 inch view camera to capture portraits of hunters, national champion trees, compelling extended landscapes and extraordinary moments from the every day.

“Barbara Bosworth’s photographs are graced with an uncommon elegance and intimacy,” “The expansive sweep and clarity of her prints open the landscape before us with a deceptive agility, but it is in their richness of experience and sensation that they are so compelling.” Toby Jurovics, Curator
Earlier this fall I had the great pleasure of walking through Barbara’s recent exhibition “Earth and Sky” at the Smithsonian Art Museum with curator Toby Jurovics - a complete delight - don’t miss this link to that show, and don’t miss this lecture!

The Introductory Presentation for this evening: KLEA McKENNA. who also explores the landscape in her work.

It's portfolio review season

Photo marketing guru Mary Virginia Swanson has a great post on her blog about whether or not one should attend portfolio reviews. These are words of wisdom from an experienced reviewer. Several upcoming portfolio review registration dates are coming up so if you plan to attend, stand by your phone (I'm not kidding, these fill up fast!), there are dates and links at the bottom of MVS's portfolio reviews post.
