Job Description:

Work remotely

You must have access to your own Mac work station

Good organizational skills

Reliable!!!

Photoshop skills for fine-art; including dusting, masks, alpha channels, color correction for RGB and Grayscale, and digital output

Large format experience

Scanning skills, imacon or epson flatbed

Interest in learning and photography a must!

Production, printing, scanning, assisting, (large format & lighting)

Good writing and people skills, and understanding of professional standards

I am looking for a long-term intern for 3 upcoming projects. The first requires a great deal of organization skill and can be done on your own time, the second is production help for several upcoming shows, and the third requires research and contacting companies on my behalf for an upcoming project. I worked for many years as an intern so I am very understanding about the value of your time, however, I need someone who can commit 1 – 6 hours per week off site to work for the next two months. After that the schedule will be more varied. There is a chance if you are so inclined to also be involved in some of my other curatorial and photo projects. The internship is currently un-paid, however, I am happy to share my time and energy to help you on your artistic path in any way I able to do so.

Graphic Intersections

Graphic Intersections is a collaborative project loosely based on the old Surrealist and Dadaist game The Exquisite Corpse. Designed to unite disparate artists in an interconnected photographic relay of images inspired by one another, this project strives to emphasize a system of response entirely rooted in unmediated visual reaction.

The first photographer made a photograph, which was subsequently forwarded to the second in line. The 2nd then, based solely on their own visual, emotional, intellectual or philosophical response, in turn made photographs in artistic reaction to the one they were given. The artists involved were not given any written material to accompany the photograph, nor did they know whose image they were responding to. This was designed to propagate chance, or as the Surrealist’s put it, exploit “the mystique of accident.”

Ultimately, Graphic Intersections to challenge the bounds of sequential, narrative imagery, while simultaneously fostering stronger lines of artistic affiliation.

Congratulations to Erika Larsen, Women in Photography Grant Winner

A big congratulations to Erika Larsen, the winner of Women in Photography-Lightside Grant! Another congratulations to Erica Allen, the runner-up of the grant!

Women in Photography celebrated their one year anniversary last Wednesday at the National Arts Club in New York City. Along with that came the announcement for their grant winner and runner up, sponsored by Lightside Photographic Services. It was certainly a packed gallery as the viewers kept wondering who the winner of the grant was.

Amy Elkins and Cara Phillips talked about how they came into existence, basically from one email forwarded by Joerg Colberg (Conscientious) about a NY Times article on the topic of "gallerinas." Cara forwarded the article to a number of female artists, photographers, and bloggers and quickly developed a plan with Amy (who conveniently lived 10 blocks away from Cara) to find a way to display work by women photographers. There was fast following and many supported the idea, such as the Humble Arts Foundation, who help host the website. It's amazing how fast Women in Photography gained momentum. 

Erika Larsen will focus on a new series of work entitled, "Sami, The People." The project will focused on the indigenous natives living in the Arctic Circle region of northern Scandinavia. Head over to the website to see a selection of images from the beginning of this project.

The new crop of Hot Shots from the Jen Bekman Gallery were officially announced yesterday. Congrats to Yijun (Pixy) Liao and Cara Phillips to be among the five winners! I have conversed with Pixy through emails just by randomly seeing her work on Flickr and noticed we had mutual friends. She agreed to participate in a Nymphoto Conversation which will be published on Christmas Eve's Eve, December 23rd, featuring her project, Experimental Relationship.

The opening reception of the Hey, Hot Shot! (volume iv, edition ii) Showcase will be on Friday, January 30th, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jen Bekman Gallery @ 6 Spring Street, NYC. Work will be on view until Saturday, February 14th, 2009.

New York, New York—November 2008—Humble Arts Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of Things Are Strange, curated by Jon Feinstein. The group exhibition, which opens on Election Day, presents work by eighteen photographers whose images explores the peculiar, idiosyncratic and often absurd elements of the contemporary world, using them as a metaphor for the current state of social and political affairs. The work includes a range of subjects, from the bizarre phenomena of Emiliano Granado's documentary pictures of ghost hunters and Cara Phillips' transformation of plastic surgery machines into terrifying robots to Eric Percher's exploration of the alienation of late night finance workers and Amy Stein's images of stranded American travelers. Each photographer, by varying degrees, alludes to a world that is gradually falling apart at the seams.

Laura Napier is continuing project for a street corner with live actions/interactions this Friday and Saturday, outside on W 14th Street in Manhattan, as part of Pedestrian - a large show/event during the month of October.

A television monitor placed in a street-level cafe window displays live video feed of a nearby busy sidewalk.
The artist and friends appear on camera and carry out a series of actions to highlight and disrupt the ordinary behaviors of pedestrians.

Happening this Friday, October 17 (4-6pm); and also Saturday, October 18 (4-6pm), outside 348 W 14th Street.

PEDESTRIAN During the month of October 2008, the fourth annual Art in Odd Places will present Pedestrian on 14th Street, Manhattan - the great divider between uptown/downtown and highbrow/lowbrow. From the East River to the Hudson River, artists of all mediums will encourage the masses of daily pedestrians to rediscover this corridor of diverse commerce, including Union Square, historical site of social and political activism. Projects will explore connections between public spaces, pedestrian traffic, and ephemeral transient disruptions. Like a scavenger hunt, New Yorkers will use a map to discover art in unexpected places along this amazing street.
