Sarah Pickering: Fire Scene

Sarah Pickering's photographs are taken at the perfect moment, almost giving the effect of illusion. I'm going to check out her latest show Fire Scene at Daniel Cooney Fine Art. I love her photos of explosions taken during military training exercises, I've always been a sucker for fireworks and other things that go boom.

E-mail Campaign to Keep 35mm Kodak Infared Film in Production

Photographer Shelly Wood has started an e-mail campaign to encourage Kodak to keep their HIE Infrared 35 mm Film in production. This only takes a second to complete.
Simply email Kodak's Patrick Hamilton at
patrick.hamilton@kodak.com and either paste the following:

"PLEASE REVERSE PLANS TO DISCONTINUE MANUFACTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF HIE-135 INFRARED FILM".

or write your own quick note.

Shelly Wood says:
"Mr. Hamilton has encouraged me to write Kodak and is aware of this
email campaign to save HIE-135. He has assured me that he will get the messages to the appropriate people."

Tierney Gearon @ SVA

From the SVA website:

The Camera Club of New York Presents: Tierney Gearon
Tuesday, January 22, 7pm
Best known for arresting images of her family, photographer Tierney Gearon came to prominence with a 2001 exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, where nude portraits of her children set off a media controversy. From 2003 to 2005 she was shadowed by a documentary film crew for The Mother Project, a 2007 Sundance Channel documentary that charts the evolving, complex relationship between Tierney and her schizophrenic mother. The photographs that Gearon took on this journey became a critically acclaimed exhibition at the Yossi Milo Gallery. In a new book, Daddy Where Are You? (Steidel, 2007), Gearon revisits her relationship with her family through revealing tableaux and portraits of her mother.

Amphitheater
209 East 23 Street, 3rd floor
Admission is free for SVA students and Camera Club members; other students (with ID) $5; regular admission $10

SAA wins 'Best of 2007' award from Stock Asylum

The best non-profit organization: Stock Artists Alliance. (via SAA website)

Through no fault of their own, stock photographers have during the last decade lost a voice in stock industry affairs. Technological and other changes essentially placed all meaningful decision-making power into the hands of a few executives. In the long run, this has been good for no one, including the privileged distributors for whom these executive work.

Sapped of its vitality, the traditional stock photo industry has stagnated. It enters 2008 in a position that is so weak the top executive at a leading company suggests he is "realistic" about growth in his company's core product.

For a small organization with modest funding, Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) was a significant force in the stock industry this year. The organization of stock photographers was able to muster a number of photographers' trade groups to collectively exert meaningful pressure on stock distributors.

Because of SAA, photographers again had a modest voice in industry affairs. And the entire industry will be better for it.

Diane Arbus Archives given to the Met

Diane Arbus' archives has just been given to the Met by her estate. Read about it in this NYTimes article. In the retrospective the Met put up two years ago, the personal effects displayed as recreations of her darkroom and library were informative and offered an insightful view on the personal side of a well known photographer. This will become a great resource for Arbus scholars.
